Sukhbaatar Square reopened on November 3 after lengthy renovations. The 31,068-m² center of Ulaanbaatar was covered with granite tiles requiring Tg3.5 billion and 7,560 tons of granite.
The restoration work, which began in April 2002, was completed in part by the donations of 132 organizations totaling Tg500 million. This renovation is the first change made to the square since its initial paving in 1940.
The work included the installation of a water-removal system and additional lighting.
Many diplomatic representatives and members of Parliament attended the opening ceremony. Prime Minister N.Enkhbayar, Parliament Speaker S.Tomor-Ochir and City Governor Enkhbold placed the final granite panel, representing the area of the country where Ulaanbaatar was established as the capital.
For the opening ceremony, the lamas of the Gandan monastery gave a prayer for the city's welfare and a concert was performed. Top
