Journalism Intern

Position Status: Intern, full-time
Purpose: Provides the opportunity for a student to apply journalism
skills and education to an international field based newspaper. The
successful candidate will support Mercy Corps' USAID-funded Gobi Region
Economic Growth Initiative (Gobi Initiative) by providing
journalistic input to Rural Business News (RBN) and assisting program
staff for six to twelve months.
RBN is the news and information department of the Gobi Initiative that
consists of a monthly Mongolian language news magazine and
daily radio programs. Over 100,000 copies of RBN news magazine are distributed
to very soum (district) of Mongolia. RBN magazine and
radio content includes market information, weather forecasts, policy updates,
technical advice on herd and resource management, and
personal interest stories.
Qualifications: The successful candidate must currently be enrolled
in a Masters level program and be receiving academic credit
throughout the length of assignment. Strong writing and editing skills
are essential. Although a journalism student is ideal, other
multidisciplinary graduate programs may provide the education base necessary
to support the RBN program.
International living experience is required; work with international
non-governmental organizations and field journalism experience is
preferred.
Demonstrated skill and experience in writing economic and business articles
is preferred. Creative thinking and an ability to be
self-driven is essential. Effective verbal and written communication,
multi-taskng, organizational and prioritization
skills are necessary. Demonstrated attention to detail, ability to follow
procedures, meet deadlines and work independently and cooperatively with
team members is required. Must be able to adjust and live comfortably
in an underdeveloped country where running water, electricity and other
amenities are not always available and medical facilities may be several
days away. Must be willing and able to regularly travel long
distances by vehicle to remote areas of Mongolia, including the Gobi Desert.
Responsibilities/Duties:
1. Review and edit articles produced by local Mongolian staff and
journalists.
2. Organize and facilitate seminars and workshops, primarily for
local staff and stringers that build their journalistic skills.
3. Provide editorial input during editorial board meetings.
4. Write articles on economic and business issues using a writing
style similar to The Economist.
5. Write a Gobi Initiative case study of the RBN program, focusing
on lessons-learned, that will be shared with other Mercy Corps
programs around the world.
6. Other responsibilities as assigned.
Mercy Corps will cover travel costs, living expenses, and a stipend.
Health and AD&D insurance is required and will be the responsibility
of the intern.
